GoodWill Hutch - UPDATED

Three years ago - I made the ultimate find when I scored this cool HUTCH over at Goodwill for 70.00 and I shared the whole make-over on this post

this is what the original hutch looked like

It was a funky 1970's brown

totally needed a lot of work but what a steal

here was the finished pieced - I painted it a light gray with soft blue highlights and added a cream color on the inside

and here she was all put together with all my "STUFF" - not bad right, for a thrift store find?

Fast forward to this past weekend -- since I posted these photos (3 years ago) - we have gotten our kitchen renovated. New floors, new cabinets and new wall paint. So I felt it was time to change up our Hutch to match our new kitchen. It only took three years to decide to mess with perfection -

So this past weekend I did it - it went fast because here in Southern California it was 100' hot - so it dried really quick.

Here she is - looking dapper and FRESH

Yes I chose a white - not off white, or creamy white but solid WHITE and can you see there up close

Notice the change up in what I put into the hutch (much better looking - for sure)

Painted the entire inside white and

sanded the edges to give it that shabby rustic look - our cabinets in the kitchen are white and the walls are gray and the floors are gray wooden panels - so I think the white hutch helps you eye follow around the whole kitchen.

I will have to take a panoramic photo of the whole kitchen so you can see the whole thing put together!

Not only was this hutch a great find, it was also a great price at 70.00 and now I have had it for 3 years and its gone thru 2 changes in color and a complete over haul for my kitchen.

It also helped me purge the "stuff" I really didn't need inside the hutch - notice all the turquoise, white & red accents - kept it cohesive and un-cluttered!!!

Hope you like it and remember there is nothing embarrassing about shopping at thrift stores and you never know when you will stumble upon a gem in the rough :-)

Ugly Sweater Pin

I am sure that I am not the only one with kids who wait until the last minute to tell us they need something the next day. Take for instance this last week before school lets out for Winter brake...All week the school planned for days like, Christmas sock day, pajama day and ugly sweater day...

 

So we looked at some stores but the sweaters weren't really ugly and at 25.00 and up I didn't think it was worth it, we found some vulgar sweaters not suitable for my girls and then the obnoxious ones were 40.00 and up - so no thank you not for one day of one year....so mom, that's me, decided to find a sweater at the Thrift store my go to spot for DIY projects.

 

Found this bright green sweater in the women's section and took it home. Then pulled out a bunch of different do-dads I had at home so she could decide how she wanted to put it together.

I was thinking we were going for AN UGLY SWEATER but she had a different idea. She looked on PINTEREST and found one she liked and she designed the reindeer cut it out and I glued all the stuff down, because I was using Hot glue...and here is what she made

 

Here is the crafty genius in her new sweater...which she wore on Thursday

 

Her older sister liked it so much she wore it to school today.

 

Goes to show that a little creativity can go a long way!!!

the Goodwill HUTCH

I don't think there is a single person out there, rich or poor, that doesn't love a good thrift store. Personally I prefer the smaller - guy next door type of thrift store,the prices are a bit more reasonable. But on a recent trip to the GOODWILL I found a diamond in the rough....

An OLD 1970's hutch...here is the top of the hutch

Here is the hutch after I painted the hutch a light grey. There is no color name because I created it - I made some CHALK PAINT using 2 parts paint to 1 part plaster of Paris, just mix and add until you get a thick pancake type mix...then I added black acrylic paint until I got the color I needed. You wouldn't think it but I used quite a bit of black paint to get it to this color.

 

 

 

I painted the inside back of the hutch top with a cream colored paint and the edges of the inside of the hutch I painted a light robins egg blue.

 

I accented the cupboard doors and the top cabinet doors with the same blue

 

and here is the grand reveal....

 

 

We found the knobs at Hobby Lobby and I just SPRAY painted them with a matching cream paint

 

I am thinking I may need to touch up the screws

I know you may be thinking that yellow walls & red accents is all too much color for a kitchen but I guess its a reflection of my life, scattered, filled with kids and chaotic...kind of like my decorating ideas in that there kitchen.

 

I LOVE it!!!

 

 

I wanted to have a substantial piece in the kitchen and I wanted it to work less like a showcase piece and more of a functional storage unit. I put my glass ware in here and some serving pieces in here that are easily accessible. Again lots of color....

 

but compared to my last piece I think this is a really awesome improvement...

 

Here is my last hutch ---vintage lovely but not real practical...the glass doors stuck a lot and the whole thing was a bit wobbily and the drawers served as a clutter catch all and this hutch served merely as a collection case...nothing was ever used in it...

 

 

I painted it black too - not very happy

but the detail was amazing on it...

 

see vintage Pyrex and little collections never handled or used...just a showcase unit

and OH so thin - hence the wobbily-ness....

 

in case you are wondering I sold this piece for 130.00 and bought my new one for

 

 

 59.99 at GOODWILL...

not a bad trade off right???

so keep that in mind when you are out at thrift stores...things may look bad but its nothing a bit of paint cant fix....

New month

For a long time now I have wanted to change up this blog - like make it look nice by getting it professional1y done but of course I have yet to do so. Anyway, I tried my hand at some fun change-ups on my own. I got all these great looking banners & backgrounds from the GRAPHICS FAIRY which if you haven't visited her - you must. She has some amazing photos for you to use & download for FREE.

Anyway, back to the CHANGE UP....I want to make my blog a bit more CO-HESIVE. I want to have a rhythm to my blog. So to starts, I bought a new calendar and have started to figure out a weekly plan that works for me & it will follow a DAY OF THE WEEK theme. So today being Thursday I thought I would make it THRIFTY THURSDAY. Sounds like fun right.

Here are this weeks Thrift Store Pick Ups!

 

I have been using these embroidery hoops for all kinds of fun crafty ideas. Love all the different shapes and different sizes - especially the vintage ones.

 

 

 

I love collecting vintage Christmas pieces. Whenever I find them I snatch them up.

All that plastic vintage greenery - love!

 

Vintage Santa's & angels - gotta have them. Those xmas balls aren't vintage but I have some really cool plans for them.

 

Finally, I have a love for vintage fabric calendars and I found a whole basketful of these babies this week and best part is that they were 1.00 each. These are so well worn and are from the 70's and have a faded coolness to them.

 

Ha! gosh I love THRIFTING....I would love to come by and see your thrifting treasures.

playing with GLUE

I know we all have our favorite ADHESIVE/GLUE...actually I think we

have a selection of several different glues for different types of projects,right?

well my all time favorite - go to - the all purpose GLUE of all glues is

E6000---it is super strong and works on just about any surface...

take for instance these bits of glass that I found at my local thrift store...

just ordinary stemware & a bowl...

grab a few other doo-dads and get to work...

{see that tube -another adhesive}

Add some decoupage medium to the bottom of the bowl then add ...

add a doily or anythign you want to the bottom...I thought this would make the

inside look vintage ---what a treat when reaching in and how cool that by adding

it to the bottomof the bowl you never have to worry about finger prints or the doily

lifting...neat!

then grab the trusty E-6000 and add it to the bottom of the wine glass

then add to the bowl and there you go a fancy recycled set of stemware

turned into a nifty candy dish or soap dish or use it in your office or studio to hold paper clips 

I know crazy cool right????

I am planning on filling mine up with small skeleton heads for HALLOWEEN & maybe some

ornaments for the Christmas season-neat idea, wouldn't you agree?
