for the love of Burlap

I have total love for Burlap - and if you have ever touched the stuff there is really alot not to like about it. It sheds when you cut into it and its rough to the touch but the colors it comes in are dreamy and I am extremely fond of making banners out of them - and truthfully not much touching going on with banners - just take them out and string them up...

Here are few I just made and listed in the shop and I took these photos with some of my sweet holiday gnomes.

aren't these banners fun and look how great they look with my Gnomes.

Check out my instagram feed for a video I shared of my mantel decorated with all the Fourth of July goodies I have made and yes they are for sale in my shop.

Hope your week has been a crafty one.

It's a New Month

Wow - its been awhile since the last time I posted. Where did the time go? Last time I shared a trip I had just taken with my girlfriends. A week later I went on another trip with my husband to Nashville, Tennessee. It was Literally a weekend trip and it was so fun and jam packed with sight seeing. I will share more photos of that trip soon.

I wanted to share some of my newest little creations. My GNOMES.

I am obsessed - as I am sure I have shared before - but these little guys are the cutest little things ever.

So these are my RALLY GNOMES
I made this set with Dodger and Angel fabric and added some cute little baseballs on the their caps.

And because I wanted to make sure I didn't leave any sports fan out - Here are some more
this time its soccer and basketball Gnomes...
LOVE LOVE...

I am also making them for other Holidays - currently just finishing up the
Patriotic/Americana
4th of July GNOMES>

I am just so happy with the way they came out!

Here is a close up of the fabric for the Americana Gnomes

In case you want to add to your home decor or want a fun gift idea - these are all up in the shop right now.

New Creation

A few weeks ago I was busy die cutting felt shapes and I made some fun little felt banners which I will share later...but I came up with a NEW CREATION that I needed desprately....A book mark (haha) but really a cool looking bookmark...

the premise behind the well needed bookmark - is that I LOVE LOVE LOVE magazines and I buy alot and well I usually only find time to read them in the bathroom (I know TMI) but I never seem to have a bookmark and I hate to fold the corners and sometimes I end up using a piece of toilet paper (weird I know) so this cool bookmark came into my mind and I set out to make it.

I used some elastic

sewed up the meeting points - I cut the elastic a bit smaller then the full length of the magazine. So basically I pulled it and made sure it was tight then cut it - you want it tight so it doens't just fall off. while its holding your place.

then just took my die cut felt flower stack and sewed it on to the meeting point of the elastic to cover the thread up.

and here she is all finished - isnt shee pretty and the cool thing about them is that I can keep them in the bathroom with my other head bands and keep a few on my bedside table and one in my car - they are small enough to keep in my bag to - anyway - I think its pretty clever...Plan on making more and adding them to my shop -

Happy Monday and happy crafting.

Vintage pillowcase apron - 20 minute sewing project

Just wanted to share the tutorial for the apron I wrote about in the last post. If you have any questions let me know and here's hoping you get crafty this weekend.

Vintage WOW

MI have to admit that I have a love for all things VINTAGE especially a love for vintage linens. I have a bunch of cool vintage table cloths and hankies and sheet sets. So recently I started looking for things I could make out of the sheet sets because there is seriously so much yardage to work with. One project I a, starting soon is to make a cute biggie liner for my "flea market cart" and with the matching pillow cases I found a quick tutorial from an old blog I was linked up to for an apron.

Here it is cute,  right? And it's quick to sew up and complete.

In the next post I have a small tutorial on how to make this cute apron. I made this one for me so that I can use it during my craft shows for my cards and my money...

Let me know what you think.

Happy Crafting. Have a beautiful weekend.

Red White and Blue

Oh how I love to sew! Straight line sewing that is...I wish I could really see as in make clothes and quilt but alas I will stick to scrappy sewing!

In honor of the Fourth of July I wanted to share a sweet and super easy project made using Scraps!

You will need some scraps of fabric in the following colors: red, white & blue and some bits of ribbon and some lace.

I used a a base fabric like some Muslin to see onto. I first started off with the rows of blue fleece & ribbon bits and sewed them down in rows not really worrying about things laying perfectly straight. Once I had things laying like I liked I free hand stitched all over the top to help make it lay flat!!!

Then I free hand cut out stars from some thick lace and stitched them to the blue.

Then came the bottom part - I used bits of burlap, ric rac, and some seam binding...and just stitched across the top only because I wanted it to flow and go with the breeze (should a freak wind kick up suddenly in this heat)

I love the shabby look of it. It Looks handmade and that's the look I was going for, (wink wink)

I decided that this would be something I leave out year around to show our support for the most amazing people who fight for our freedom and those who have fought in the past!

Feeling proud to be an American!

Happy 4th of July everyone!

Lets make some banners

I want to share a video I made to give you some ideas on creating quick and easy mini banners with things you have around the house, I presume you are living in a crafty house {wink wink}

O.k. in case you want to know specifics before hand so you can be prepared, some items you can use to make these cool banners are felt, paper that has been punched with paper punches, in this case I used a heart punch and of course your sewing machine....

later I'll show you where I placed my banners around my house and some other quick decorating ideas.

Happy crafting - I am linking this up to the parties above.

sewing again - day 39

Oh my Goodness - I cant explain these crazy spurts I get but I occasionally get a hankering for sewing up something - anything...and something easy, take for instance garlands...Talk about quick..

Take some felt or fabric cut out your shape and sew through all the piece to create a quick and easy garland.

triangles turned simple garland and if you take "SAID" shapes and sew down the middle - you get a totally different type of banner...check it out

then you could add the super easy, quickly sewn and super cute banners to a vignette like this

Neat right???

I just love these easy projects.

Pillow Case Re-do

I think its a girl thing where we feel it an inherent obligation to change up our living environment on a regular basis. Luckily I don't paint rooms often - like once or twice every three years. But I do like to buy home dec like weekly. I change things up on my walls and on my shelves quite regularly. My husband is always amazed at how quick my moods or likes change. Anyway, he doesn't usually object other then perhaps wondering (to himself) out loud how much something cost?? What he doesn't know won't hurt him right?

So recently I learned to make pocket pillow cases. It seemed a bit complicated when I was watching someone elses tutorial - so I decided to share how I make pocket pillow covers the easy way -

Here is a photo of my previous pillow covers. Cool geometric design but wasn't feeling the red and blues anymore...

Here is a shot of the back of the pillow - hopefully you can see the pocket???

Here are my new pillow covers. LOVE these calming colors and the design on the fabric.

The pocket is much more visible on this photo.

Here's the HOW ---

measure the pillow - mine was 19 inches - odd I know
for the front of the pillow I cut out a 20 inch square (depending on your seam allowance)
for the back of the pillow I cut out one 11 inch piece (squarish) and one 9 inch piece
these pieces will overlap and create the pocket
on the back pieces I added a small hem to avoid the fraying -
you can see the fold on the left

once the hems are done I place the fabric right sides facing and just stitch down
ALL four sides

(pin the pieces just to keep things together while sewing)

I used a 1/4 inch seam allowance - because I wanted a tight fit around my pillows.

And here are my NEW pillow covers.
These colors are much more pleasing to the eye, don't you agree?
This literally took me about 45 minutes to cut & sew up these awesome covers.
Try it you'll find that once you get the basic idea down - you'll be making covers for all the pillows in your house and its so much cheaper then buying new pillows so often.

3 step felt sunglass case

Its the middle of May and while June 21 is the beginning of Summer - here in our neck of the world OUR SUMMER officially begins Wednesday the 22nd of May. The last day of school for my 2 youngest children is the 22nd at 11:45 to be exact so lots of time in the summer sun is ahead of us.

This past weekend we went to Palm Springs and my sun glasses just lay freely in my bag - banging about - so with plans for summer outings in the works I figured I better get a case for my glasses - quick or I am sure I'll be shelling out lots for new glasses with the scratches and dings left on my shades...enter my "CRAFTINESS" lightbulb moment:
Quick 3 step sunglass case

Supplies needed: Felt, ribbon and embellishments

(1)Cut a square piece of felt (when closed will cover your sunglasses) - once you have your square cut grab some ribbon and lay it out -
(2)once you figure out the look you want straight stitch it on to the felt.

(3)Next turn the felt right sides facing each other and sew up the 2 sides - then turn inside out

The three steps are done but once you have a turned the case right side out you COULD add your embellishments - I added what I thought were hand sewn & cut feathers but my daughter said they look like leaves - oh well.
At least it looks good on.

I am super thrilled with my new sunglass case and so are my sunglasses - no more roughin' it and banging away in my purse...

I hope you have a chance to make one to suit your fancy.

needle & thread

I consider myself a VERY crafty person. But like every good super crafty hero I do have a nemesis and that is: needle & thread crafting. You know sewing, pattern reading, crochet, knitting and embroidery. I try and for the most part I can make "something" but it doesn't resemble the piece I was TRYING to make. I can sew straight lines on a sewing machine but my goal is to make a top or t-shirt for myself. But for now I will stick with my pillows and aprons...another thing on my to do list is to make a SAMPLER - which consists of fun embroidered art patches...but in the mean time here are some of the things I have been playing with

I know this is WAY TO SIMPLE but yet it is still not perfect.

I even made an ANTI-VALENTINE heart - would you dare wear that out in public? I don't think I could...besides for me LOVE absolutely doesn't suck - I love being in LOVE!!!

Since it is so easy I thought I would share the tutorial for it of
 which is super self-explanatory...

cut out 2 heart shapes out of felt
on the top heart "embroider" with needle & thread a letter or a saying and just do the basic back stitch
 (see how on you tube)
when you are done with the top -  blanket stitch the edges - leaving a small opening to stuff with poly-fil. then close up
add a pin back or barrette clip to put on and wear.

super simple and these would make a fun gift to give to your pals --- just attach them to a fun embellished tag and you got a cool handmade gift.

So many fun blogs sharing lots of cool Valentines Day crafts: sharing my hearts with the following parties:

Burlap LOVE

I know I am not the only one with BURLAP love - something rustic about it
yet it can be easily kicked up to shabby or Parisian or holiday-ish.
{Did you know that Burlap came in a bunch of great colors???}
I want to share with you some fun pillows I made using this awesome fabric.

I cut out rectangle shapes of the burlap, sewed up the four sides leaving
an opening to stuff later. Then I got some fun FOAM letter stamps and I used
speed ball ink - but you could use acrylic paint as well.
Then I just went to town. I thought up some fun sayings and just stamped them
out and used some making memories Halloween stamps (images)
I made some larger pillows too and am just finishing them and will
share them later this week.

These are fun to add to your Halloween decorating. They would be great on your
outdoor patio - because they are burlap they can handle the elements.

Just so it's clear. These aren't to be washed unless you make a pillow case for the stuffing.
Because burlap is so cheap - I don't worry much about them getting dirty or
torn. They are cheap enough to toss away.

I will be sharing more fun Halloween projects that you can make and decorate with
between now and October 23...

Happy crafting....

Sew crafty-Pillow

I have always loved sewing projects and I pretty much have NO experience sewing (for real)
I can sew straight stitches easily but never "REALLY" straight...so when I decided to make some NEW
pillow covers for our IKEA accent pillows that sit atop our IKEA couch - I figured I would
just follow the "LOOK" of the old pillow covers---easy right?

I mean it's just a simple pocket envelope style pillow cover with the button closures

cute toile pattern and nice but I was tired of them...so I picked a funky pattern and
with some color in it and tah-dah

here is my new pillow cover....minus the button hole closures - I added velcro instead
I know cheesy and if you don't EXAMINE the sewing construction - it looks pretty
close to the other one right? I am pleased and my hubby loved the new cover
and my kids thought they looked pretty cool too...I need to make one more and then
my couch re-do will be done. I can get "sew"-crafty at times but so long as there is no one
checking the pre-cisness - I am good to go.
(Note to self: sign up for that sewing class once & for all!)

pincushions-a new twist

so I must have this small - teensy weency obsession with pin cushions lately...
cuz I made some more.
aren't they sweet? I know this has been done before - it's not like I discovered this on my own
but it was the first time I tried it and with NO tutorial. So I thought I would make one up for you.
But please be aware that this by no means is the RIGHT way or the BEST way to make this...
it is JUST MY way.

so you'll need a small 1.00 frame from Michaels,

some fabric, some stuffing and a glue gun.
Fist thing I did was cut the frame away from the frame backing...then I glued
on some from around the chipboard frame then I glued around it a bit more until
I formed a pocket and stuft that pocket with stuffing.

then finished the sluing around the back then because the frame NO longer fit properly
I glued it in place.

see how sweet - but DONT go looking at the back of the frame - gotta cover that up.

anyway, its a cute idea to add this with some fun sewing supplies and make a great gift for a gal pal.

something from nothing

like any real crafter out there I try new things all the time. Some are totally EPIC
and sometimes they are an epic fail. Take for instance these square lavender filled sachets
not sure what I was thinking - they are pretty but didn't really think this idea thru...not really much to them...
and to be totally honest - when I placed them on my table at my last boutique people asked
what are these? Uh, well isn't it obvious? OBVIOUSLY NOT!

So I played with them for a bit and pulled out some other bits and bobs
and decided to repurpose them...leaving the shape the same but adding some fun trim to them.

And check this out - some ribbon, some velcro and some sewing and
some wrist pin cushions that smell terrific...

sewed the ribbon on then sewed on the velcro to make it adjustable

cute right? and happy to make something from nothing and it turned out better
then the first go around...lovin'em!

here are all three lined up sort of the same but a bit different.

hah--love to be able to make something even BETTER - I am so thrilled and will be sharing this

the one about sewing

I envy people that can sew - especially the people that can quilt and those that can make
clothes...I am in awe of their attention to detail and their versatility. I have wanted to try
and HONE my sewing skills for years now and even have several machines
I even recently bought a serger (STILL UNTOUCHED) but I am
hoping to do something fabulous with it....but for now I will stick to my BASIC
skills and continue making simple things that only require a straight stitch...
like this:
these are super easy and all they require is a straight stitch...I have a
stash of fabric and I LOVE making these banners so much that I make them alot...

Here is one for Christmas or the Holiday season.

I also use some fun and vintage binding & ric rak for the piece that holds them together.

I would love to see your recent sewing project and if you have any links to
easy sewing classes or lessons - I would love to hear about it.
